Marker Unveiling and Library Grand Opening
altOn March 27, two special events will celebrate Clay's history.

At 10 a.m., a historical marker will be unveiled at Clay City Hall. This marker tells of Clay's community roots back to 1806. It also tells of a few unique geographical features in the City we call home, including that just north of Clay is Cahaba Mountain, the source of the Cahaba River. The public is invited to the event.

At 11 a.m. the Clay Public Library will have their grand opening with a special speaker telling of the history of Jayford Ware, the man who built the house that is now the library. Many have stopped by the library to ask about the house's history. Now they can learn it from those who were instrumental in the preservation efforts.

The City is eager to celebrate the opening of the library's October opening and the wonderful benefit this is providing to Clay residents.

Both events are a part of the City's participation in the Alabama Tourism Year of Small Towns and Downtowns. Restoration of the library was the civic project. It was finished in October 1, 2009, just in time for the library to open.

The historical marker was given to the City for participating in the program. Funds for the marker came from the Alabama Department of Tourism.

The City of Clay will also be included in a book to be published which has a section for each city participating. Under the leadership of Council Woman Jackie Hambrick, information and photos of our city have been sent to the publishers.

The City is also inviting all former Clay residents for a homecoming at the 2010 Clay May Days on May 8. A tour of the City's landmarks will be developed.
