The city of Clay School Committee has launched the Cougars Reading Success Program or "CRSP." As adults, we know the importance of being able to read well.
Good reading skills, including reading comprehension, are important at every stage of our lives. The volunteers in the Cougars Reading Success Program will be working with grades K-3, assisting the teaching staff to reach the children who find reading challenging. Helping these children get a solid start in reading is crucial. Students will struggle to meet grade-level expectations if they are not reading well while in the early grades. The academic performance gap between these children and those who read well widens as they move through the grade levels.
The Cougars Reading Success Program goal is to work in Clay Elementary and Chalkville Elementary. Initially, we estimate that the program will need sufficient volunteers to staff fifteen 30-minute slots per week at each campus. The goal is to build a pool of 45-60 volunteers for each school. Sixty volunteers per school would allow each one to have one reading session every four weeks.
This is a great opportunity to participate in your community and help put some children on the path to success. You do not need special training, just a commitment to help. Improvement will be seen from the children just reading aloud while someone is listening to them. If you would like to help, please fill out the form below, and we will help you get started in making this valuable contribution to the community and to an individual child's future.
