Litter Problems
In addition to the cost of cleaning up litter, studies have shown these effects of littered communities:
·         Lack of community pride
  • Lower property values
  • Perception of a declining community.
  • Increase in crime.
  • Negative impact to the local businesses.
  • Threat to public health.
  • Degradation of waterways.
  • Harm to wildlife.
WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP KEEP CLAY CLEAN?
As an individual citizen . . . .
  • Set an example for your family and friends and encourage others to do the same.
  • Secure paper and other items so that they don’t blow out of your vehicle.
  • When you see litter, pick it up and put it in a trash can.
  • Keep a litter bag in your vehicle.
  • If you are a smoker, carry and use a portable or pocket ashtray.
  • Make sure your trash cans have lids that can be securely fastened or use bungee cords to hold them in place.
  • Recycle.  A recycle bin is behind Clay City Hall. The Alabama Environmental Council Recycling Center is located at 2431 2nd Avenue North and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Volunteer for community-wide cleanups
As a business . . . .
  • Encourage your employees to take pride in their workplace by keeping it and the grounds litterfree. Go the extra mile and keep the adjacent right of way free of litter.
  • Educate your employees by placing anti-litter articles in your newsletters and on bulletin boards.
  • Make sure your dumpsters are tightly closed.
  • Provide cigarette/litter receptacles at the entrance to your building.
  • Start a recycling/waste reduction program at your company.
